Sunday morning at about 4 AM I was lying awake in bed (I'm a light sleeper and have mild insomnia) when I heard the screech of brakes and a loud bang. Instantly the lights went out. It was far enough away that I wasn't certain whether it was to the north or south, and by the time I had gotten up I could hear sirens. The lights were out for a couple of hours.
Today the newspaper reports that a 15-year-old girl was killed and the driver ran off, alcohol was involved.
It seems strange to think that something so awful could happen so close to my house. But in the last six months or so there have been two murders in my neighborhood- one last week.
All three events are probably alcohol and drug-related. I wish people had more common sense about that sort of thing.
